If you’ve already got a hold of the basic crochet stitches, and you want to add a little charm to your creations, today you’ll learn an easy and attractive stitch that also allows you to add colors in an original way: spike stitch.

For this tutorial, you’re going to need: a 5 mm crochet hook, and in this case, we’re using three skeins of Pima Cotton in different colors.

This is a fun and simple crochet stitch. To make it, you only need to know how to

To begin, chain a multiple of 6 chains + 2 extra to leave a selvage stitch on each side.

Rows 1 to 6: work all stitches in single crochet

Row 7: after working 6 rows, change colors to begin with Spike stitch. Make a turning chain with the new color and let’s begin.

1. Insert the hook into the next stitch and work a normal single crochet stitch.

2. To make the second stitch, count two rows down and insert the hook there to make a single crochet stitch from this stitch.

3. To make the third stitch, count three rows down and insert the hook there to make a single crochet stitch from this stitch.

4. Keep working in this manner to make the next 3 stitches, counting 4, 5, and 6 rows down respectively.

One you’ve worked the 6 stitches, repeat steps 1 through 4 until there is 1 stitch left and work in normal single crochet.

Rows 8 to 13: work all stitches in single crochet

Row 14: change color and repeat rows 7 to 13.

In this tutorial, we’ve used three different colors so that you can see the contrast when making the spike stitch, but once you have mastered the technique, you can combine as many colors as you like, space the design with more or fewer rows, or even mix it with other types of crochet stitches. There are no limits!
